World cement production has been increasing steadily in the past and due to the unique nature of cement manufacturing, cement production is energy- and carbon-intensive. This makes it a key source of CO2 emissions. Cement production accounts for around 7% of total industrial fuel use, and almost 25% of total direct CO2 emissions from industry. It was estimated that in 2000, the cement industry emitted around 1.4 GtCO2, which accounted for approximately 5% of the global total anthropogenic CO2 emissions. This increased to 1.9 Gt in 2005, which was almost 8% of total global CO2 emissions.

This report reviews the current state of the cement industry in terms of CO2 emissions and possible mitigation strategies. Technologies and other measures that improve the energy efficiencies and reduce CO2 emissions in the cement production processes are examined. The costs of implementing the technologies and the resultant CO2 savings are evaluated.
