This report examines the role for coal in generating energy from waste. Although burning waste and coal separately has been practised for centuries, the concept of coal-waste cofiring is relatively new. Furthermore, the global generation of waste increases simultaneously with the increasing constraints for its disposal, while coal remains the most abundant fuel source. Coal-waste cofiring is considered by many as a positive way to increase energy production. This report defines and quantifies wastes identified as suitable for cofiring before summarising factors which influence policy considerations and public perception, as well as economics. Technologies for cofiring are described and supported by examples of cofiring. Recommendations for further study and research are made.
