In most cases coal-fired power plant can have its life extended by a factor of 50-100% over the original design life. This arises in part from the conservative assumptions made in the original design process and in part is a consequence of well-managed repair and maintenance in these plants. Corrosion, erosion, creep, and fatigue all act to accumulate damage within the life of the plant. The different damage mechanisms and their typical effects and locations are described in this report. Later sections describe the monitoring and life extension technologies, which allow the amount of damage accumulating in operating plant to be estimated, together with the likely future development of these technologies. Typical repair and maintenance options are also discussed.
