Computers have become a vital part of a power station operating and control system. Digital control systems (DCS) are being used to store historical data, gathered through plant engineering and operating experience. New software which uses the data stored in the DCS is being used to assist plant operators in the analysis and optimisation of plant operation, including integrated emissions control. Numerous dedicated software packages are being used in the field of control technology to minimise air pollutant emissions, mainly NOx. Most of the computer-based developments are concentrated in the USA. In this report the application of such computer systems in coal-fired power plants is discussed. A database of software for process optimisation and NOx control is also available. The suppliers of relevant software packages are included as well as computer system set-up and requirement details.
