Use of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment on utility coal-fired plants began in earnest in the early 1970s and expanded rapidly in the 1980s. The trend is expected to continue into the next century. FGD equipment is installed in 18 countries (over 168 GWE) and is planned or under construction in nine other countries (over 107 GWE). This handbook gives details of all known FGD systems under the categories:

 - non regenerable systems;

 - wet lime/limestone scrubbers other wet scrubbers - spray dry scrubbers;

 - sorbent injection processes;

 - regenerable systems;

 - combined SO2/NOx removal processes (regenerable and non regenerable).

For each process there is a flowsheet (where available) and details of:

 - supplier; contact name and address, licensor and licensees;

 - system information;

 - type, name, sorbent, additives, by product, coal sulphur content, SO2 removal;

 - commercial applications.

Information contained in this handbook is based on information held on IEA Coal Research databases for FGD systems and installations for coal-fired plants. These are constantly updated and are available for individual searches or updates, subject to a fee.
