Electricity production using atmospheric fluidised bed combustion (AFBC), pressurised fluidised bed combustion (PFBC) and integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) is now being demonstrated in various countries. A number of hybrid (gasification/ fluidised bed combustion) cycles are also under development. They appear to have reasonably good prospects for generating electricity economically while meeting environmental requirements. Meanwhile, improvements to the technology of pulverised coal (PC) fired power stations continue. PC fired power stations using supercritical steam conditions might now be regarded as an established technology with scope for further development by the use of ultra-supercritical steam conditions. This study is concerned with the influence of different parameters on the current and prospective competitiveness of the different technologies. Variations in the costs of constructing and operating similar plant in different regions of the world have been considered and reasons for these differences have been suggested. Topics covered include a review of available clean coal power generation technologies, a standardised methodology for costing power generation technologies and the identification of groups of locations (not necessarily geographically contiguous) that share common problems/opportunities.
