This report considers the prospects for coal production, supply and use in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Latin America is currently one of the most dynamic regions of the global economy, with annual economic growth forecast at up to 5% for the period to 2010. Power demand is growing, set against a background of deregulation and liberalisation of energy markets. Coal output and use are analysed on a country-by-country basis, considering potential growth in markets for coal, energy and electricity demand, and fuel choices. For the purposes of this report the region Latin America is defined as all the countries of South and Central America, including Mexico and the Caribbean. The report concentrates on the six major coal-producing or coal-using countries in the region: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Venezuela. Coal prospects in the other countries are also summarised. The final chapter draws together the implications for regional and international coal supply and trade.
