This report considers the prospects for coal production, supply and use in the Russian Federation. Russian coal production has fallen dramatically since the break up of the former Soviet Union. The energy sector is undergoing major reform as part of the general transition from a centrally planned economy to an economy that is principally market led. Output has declined as coal demand has decreased. At the same time, productivity has decreased in many coalfields and there is a lack of investment in plant and new capacity. However, coal still provides around a fifth of Russia's total primary energy supply and remains an important component in the economy. Russia has huge coal reserves and remains a substantial coal producing, consuming, and exporting nation. Coal output and use are analysed, considering trends in energy use, electricity demand, and export potential, set against a background of industry restructuring.
